As a photographer specializing in maternity and newborn sessions, I understand the unique challenges and concerns that come with capturing precious family moments when young children are involved. One memorable experience that beautifully encapsulates the joy and playfulness of family photography is the Ciampa Family’s journey, featuring Jayme, Zachary, Eviana, Benicio, and the newest addition, baby Lucas.

Maternity Magic Behind the Museum of Art

Our adventure with the Ciampa Family began with a stunning maternity photoshoot behind the Museum of Art in Pennsylvania, set against the picturesque backdrop of Waterworks, Philadelphia. Maternity sessions can be a tad challenging with young kids, and the key to success often lies in engaging them through games and activities.

Understanding the restlessness of children, I always encourage families not to stress about posed perfection. Instead, we embrace the authenticity that comes with playing games. During the Ciampa Family session, we played tag, had the kids run in circles, and even let them take on the role of a mini-photographer. The result? Candid, heartwarming moments that truly reflected the essence of this growing family.

Transitioning to Newborn Bliss

The Ciampa Family’s journey didn’t end with maternity photos; I had the privilege of capturing their newborn session as well. With the arrival of baby Lucas, we shifted gears to accommodate the dynamics of a newborn shoot while keeping the older siblings involved.

While active games may take a back seat during newborn sessions, the familiarity built during the maternity shoot pays off. Kids remember the fun from before and understand that our time together is about enjoyment. Quick and playful interactions with the older siblings create beautiful, timeless images that showcase the love and excitement surrounding the newest family member.

Tips for a Seamless Family Photoshoot

For those navigating family photoshoots with young kids, consider these tips:

  • Embrace Activity: Active games and playful interactions often yield the most authentic moments. Let kids be kids and capture the genuine joy that follows.

  • Make it Familiar: Choose a location that feels comfortable, whether it’s your home or a familiar outdoor spot. Familiarity helps children relax and express themselves more freely.

  • Snack Time: Keep snacks, treats, and maybe a bit of bribery on hand. A satisfied and happy child is more likely to cooperate and enjoy the session.

  • Be Brief and Fun: For newborn sessions, for older kids I try to give them the spotlight and keep it short. Make sure they aren’t feeling left out when their session isn’t all about them that day.

At the end of my session Jayme let me know that earlier in the day Benicio was excited for me to come because I was the photographer who plays games with them. This was the ultimate compliment from a little kid! It affirmed that creating a positive and enjoyable experience for the family is just as crucial as capturing the perfect shot.

In the world of family photography, it’s not just about freezing moments in time; it’s about crafting an experience that reflects the unique essence of each family. The Ciampa Family’s story is a testament to the magic that unfolds when photography becomes a celebration of love, laughter, and the joy of growing together. I was so honored to capture these milestones for them!
